Phase 5: Monitoring

The fifth phase of trend management is about continuously observing, reviewing, and, if necessary, adjusting trends and the measures derived from them. The goal is to recognize changes early, capture new developments, and regularly question and further develop your own innovation strategy.

Effective monitoring is based on fixed routines and clear responsibilities. In the Trendmanager, functions such as Trend Alerts, regular updates of the trend database, and the ability to continuously track Innovation Fields and projects support this process. Via the Workspaces, teams can work together on the evaluation and updating of trends and document relevant information transparently.

Typical communication occasions in monitoring are, for example, the annual or quarterly Trendradar update, regular review workshops, the reporting of progress in innovation projects, or the presentation of newly identified trends. The presentation of lessons learned and the adjustment of innovation goals are also important occasions to make monitoring results visible in the company.

Various methods are suitable for effective monitoring. Review workshops help to regularly evaluate trends and Innovation Fields and set new priorities. Trend Alerts and early warning systems automatically inform you about relevant changes. Signal scanning supports recognizing weak signals and new developments early. A monitoring canvas or regular goal check-ins provide structure and transparency in the process. Typical mistakes in monitoring are unclear responsibilities, missing routines, or reviewing trends too infrequently. Ignoring weak signals, insufficient documentation, or the absence of adjustments to changed conditions can also mean that important developments are overlooked and trend management loses effectiveness.

It is important to understand monitoring as an agile and learning process. Trends, markets, and technologies change constantly. Regular review and adjustment ensure the currency and effectiveness of your own innovation strategy.

Practical tip: Set fixed dates for monitoring and ensure that the results are regularly communicated and documented. The combination of fixed routines, flexible adjustment, and open communication makes monitoring a success factor for sustainable innovation.
