What the Trenduniverse 2027 shows

Identifying a trend is the beginning, not the end result. The Trend Universe 2027 maps the most impactful mega- and macro-trends currently in play – serving as the starting point for your strategic trend work. It is based on a permanent 360-degree trend research approach within the TRENDMANAGER.

What are mega-trends?

Mega-trends are long-term, profound phenomena of change that unfold over decades and shape every aspect of society, the economy, technology, and politics. Unlike short-lived fads or hype, megatrends have a global, simultaneous impact over a time horizon of 25 years or more.

They do not emerge overnight; rather, they coalesce from many smaller developments. Concrete innovations (micro-trends) lead to overarching patterns (macro-trends), which in turn bundle together into structural changes that affect society as a whole – the megatrends. For companies, megatrends are therefore not a short-term marketing topic, but the foundation for strategic future decisions: those who understand them early on recognize opportunities and risks before they become mainstream.

Based on a permanent 360-degree trend research approach, TRENDONE currently identifies 19 megatrends – from Artificial Intelligence and Healthstyle to Quantum Leap. Below you will find an overview of all megatrends as well as the complete Mega-Trend Map available for download.

The 19 mega-trends of the Trenduniverse

Quantum Leap (NEW 2027)

Quantum technology is leaving the lab. What was long considered a promise of basic research is developing into industrial reality: quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum-based sensor technology are merging into a single technology ecosystem, ranging from molecular simulation in pharmaceutical research to portfolio optimization in finance.

Age of Disorder

Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine has massively altered the world order and intensified geopolitical and economic lines of conflict. Reliable security and economic alliances are being replaced by new ones, some of which are emerging dynamically.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence applications are becoming part of our everyday lives at an accelerating pace. Research is making rapid progress, while the potential risks associated with AI-driven processes are becoming increasingly clear.

Attention Economy

Attention is one of the most important currencies of the 21st century. Yet, in the age of social media and constant information consumption, it is fiercely contested. Users expect genuine added value and clear positioning from corporate communications.

Caring Society

In many Western societies, awareness of social injustice is on the rise. Consumers are increasingly taking action themselves, demanding transparency and change. The diversity of society and the unique needs of every individual are being recognized and addressed.

Connected World

Social media is the DNA of modern society. It permeates every aspect of daily life and relentlessly disrupts cultural and social processes. In this context, the functions of social networks go far beyond mere communication.

Taste Culture

More and more people are becoming highly conscious of their diet and the food they consume. Beyond preparation and personal eating habits, this is increasingly about moral values and individual identity.

Engineered Evolution

Humans have been intervening in the evolution of natural systems since their existence. With the availability of scientific knowledge and the maturity of technology, we are now moving toward tailoring the evolution of our own bodies and their underlying biological processes.

Evolving Consumerism

New behavioral patterns are emerging among consumers, driven by the development of new technologies, demographic shifts, the use of social media, and the desire for a balanced yet experience-rich daily life.

Exponential Industries

Industrial and manufacturing processes are undergoing exponential change. Previously separate industries are becoming drivers of innovation, and production methods like 3D printing are being applied in ever-new contexts.

Data Era

The volume of data produced daily is growing exponentially. Living beings, devices, machines—virtually all objects can now be recorded and tracked. The intelligent use of this data is one of the most significant challenges we face.

Intelligence Economy

The world of work is defined by rapid change and major upheaval. New professions, methods, and work models require skills and approaches that have not been taught in traditional education. Lifelong learning is becoming essential.

Healthstyle

The topic of health is becoming increasingly important and is being integrated more and more into our everyday lives. The need for hygiene and cleanliness is also becoming more prominent, affecting all areas of life and every industry.

Intelligent Infrastructure

Extensive technological measures are necessary to overcome infrastructure challenges, such as mobility and energy supply. Advanced network technology is indispensable for a functional City OS, which serves as the control center for a smart city.

Planet Centricity

A new social awareness regarding the impact of human activity to date is driving a multitude of new innovations. From materials and processes to communication, planet-centric topics cover the entire economic spectrum.

Seamless Commerce

Competitive pressure in retail is enormous and growing steadily. The goal is to offer customers the best cross-channel and seamless shopping experience through an omnichannel strategy.

Smart Surroundings

Our environment is hyper-connected and becoming increasingly intelligent. Whether in our own homes (smart homes), in stores, or in public spaces, technologies are being implemented that use sensors to detect living beings and objects.

Urbanization

Cities around the world continue to grow unabated. They must adapt to the increasing demands of their residents and provide attractive, flexible living space. At the same time, rural life is also becoming more appealing.

Virtualization

High-performance and versatile input devices, multi-sensory enhancements, and the increasing number of affordable and accurate sensors are opening up new possibilities in the virtual world.

How do mega-trends differ from other types of trends?

Only by looking at the different types of trends and how they interact can we understand how micro-, macro-, and mega-trends relate to one another and ultimately impact society as a whole. Major transformation processes start small.

Micro-trends: Initial signals in the form of concrete best-practice innovations, identified by TRENDONE trend scouts, that already exist today and point toward future developments.

Macro-trends: Our analysts evaluate micro-trends and cluster them based on patterns to derive overarching phenomena of change.

Mega-trends: The identified macro-trends can, in turn, be assigned to mega-trends – they describe structural changes in society and influence all areas of life.

The custom trenduniverse for your company

Trenduniverses and trend maps illustrate the entirety of the most impactful mega- and macro-trends and their interconnections. However, company-specific relevance is not automatic or guaranteed in every case. It is essential to evaluate trends individually for their general relevance and prioritize them according to urgency.

The Trendmanager integrated trend radar is perfect for this. With a trend radar , trend universes are customized and broken down to the company level.
