Checklist for idea evaluation
To evaluate innovation ideas and trends systematically, it is advisable to use a structured checklist. It helps filter out the most valuable and feasible approaches from the multitude of options.
Approach to idea evaluation: separating ideation and evaluation
1. First collect many ideas and trends before you start evaluating.
2. Evaluation with the help of a checklist
A checklist for idea evaluation can include, for example, the following questions:
- Does the idea generate added value for our customer? (customer orientation)
- Is there a need for the idea? (market orientation)
- Is a long-term benefit ensured? (sustainability of the USP)
- Does the idea support the values and visions of our brand? (brand fit)
- Is the idea feasible with the given resources? (feasibility)
- Is the risk factor acceptable? (risk)
You can record these criteria in an evaluation matrix (for example as a point system or with „yes/no/partially“) and assign them per trend or idea. Depending on the project situation, it is advisable to adapt the criteria flexibly to your objective or the workshop format.

Visualization and prioritization:
If necessary, reduce the catalog to two particularly relevant axes to create a 2x2 matrix (“WOW-HOW-NOW matrix”). This lets you position, evaluate, and prioritize trends clearly and comparably.
- WOW – highly original and easily implementable ideas = ideas for possible innovations that are already feasible now
- HOW – highly original but hard to implement ideas = ideas for the future
- NOW – not very original ideas but easy to implement = high acceptance and low risk
